Irimed is a spreading, much branched shrub or short tree with spines and alternate compound leaves. Its flowers, leaves appear similar to Babul tree but it is a shrub with may stems and has whitish bark. Babul is a tree with dark brown bark.

Habit- moderate sized deciduous tree grows up to 10 feet in height. Leaves- compound, bipinnate with  spines. Flowers- yellow, in heads, arranged in terminal panicles about 30 cm long. Fruits- Pods, black in colour , 10 to 20 cm long, narrow with 10 to 20 seeds

The paste of Irimeda wood powder is applied to treat localized inflammation,pain due to insect bite.

The twing or bark of Irimeda is chewed to trengthening the teeth and gums.


It is used In aruchi, atisara and krimi as it has properties of ruchivardhak, stambhana and krimighna. In shotha, panduroga and raktapitta being raktastambhana .It is used in pleehavriddhi being pleehasankochaka. It is also indicated in prameh being mootrasangrahaneeya. In pradara being garbhashaya shaithilyahara and mainly in kushtha being kledanashana.

Danta vyadhi (Diseases of Teeth )

Kwatha (Decoction ) of irimeda ( Acacia lucophloea ) bark and ardraka (Zingiver officinale ) is very useful in Dantavyadhi (Diseases of Teeth ).

Dantamulagata Raktasrava ( Bleeding gums )

Irimeda Taila Gandusa (Keeping oil in mouth ) is very useful in Dantamula gata vyadhi like bleeding gums.

Bark decoction of Irimeda is used to treat the diarrhea.Dose-40-50ml

The Irimeda plant decoction is used to treat cough in a dose of 40-50ml

The leaves of Irimeda plant is used to treat syphilitic ulcers and is anti-bacterial in nature.

The seed paste of Irimeda is used to control bleeding from wounds

The extract of aerial parts of plant s of the plant Irimeda is hypotensive and central nervous system depressant in nature.

The Arishta prepared from the Irimeda is used to treat abdominal distension.Dose-90-100ml

Decoction prepared from Irimeda bark is used as blood purifier.

Tender leaves bruised in little water and swallowed in case of Gonorrhea.

Decoction made by using Irimeda leaves,flower and root  is used in ring worm infestation.Dose-30ml twice a day

The root powder of Irimedaa in a dose of 1gm is taken with honey twice a day for month in case of Rickets.

Patranga Herb


A tree grows upto 30 ft. in height. Stem – Prickly, 15 to 25 cm in diameter. Branches – Armed with small prickles. Leaves – Compound, 20 to 40 cm long, pinnae are 8 to 12 pairs, 10 to 15 cm long, small prickles are seen at the base. Leaflets are 10 to 18 pairs, 1 to 2 cm long and 1 cm wide, subsessile, glabrous above and puberulous beneath. Inflorescence – Panicle, terminal and also seen in the axils of upper leaves 30 to 40 cm long. Flowers – yellow in colour. Fruits – Pods 7.5 to 10 cm long, 4 to 5 cm wide, woody, obliquely oblong, subcompressed. In dehiscent with a hard recurved short beak at the upper angle will have 3 to 4 seeds.

Benefits :

It is useful in atisara as stambhana. In raktapitta as shonitasthapana. It is also useful in unmade, apasmara as akshepahara; as kusthaghna and dahashamak. Its decoction should be given internally and used as uttarabasti as thereby it acts as stambhana in rakta and shvetapradara.

  1. – Dried heartwood used against inflammation.
  2. – Decoction is used as diuretic.
  3. – Roots, stems and seeds used as sedative and vulnerary.

It is also known as ” Kuchandan ” in dhanwantari and rajnighntu churna of Patranga used for vranaropan and raktasthambh


In case of rohini application of Patanga(Caesalpiniasappan) with sugar and honey is much beneficial.

Improve renal functions

  1. A Bark decoction is given.
  2. Itches, urticaria and rashes
  3. Heart wood paste with coconut milk is applied externally.
  4. Thirst and urinary disorders due to diabetes
  5. Heart wood decoction is taken before sleep.

Formulation (Kalp):

  1. Pittangasav.
  2. Dosage :
    1. Quatha- 40 to 80 ml.
    2. Powder -2 to 4 gm.

Pilu Herb


Large, much-branched evergreen shrub or a small tree. Stem – Bark of the old stems are rugose, branches are numerous, drooping, finely striate. Wood is whitish yellow in colour. Leaves – Fleshy, Glaucocus, 4 to 6 cm long, 2 to 3 cm wide, elliptic lanceolate, obtuse, apex. Has 5 to 6 pairs main nerves. Petiole is 1 to 2 cm long. Inflorescence – Axillarry or terminal panicle. Flower- Greenish Yellow. Fruits – Drupe, 3 mm in diameter, globose, smooth and becomes red on ripening.

Benefits :

External Application-

  1. Seed oil is used for massage in diseases like Sandhivata nd Amavata as it is Shothahar and Vedanasthapak in nature.
  2. Beeja churna of Pilu or Mulatwak of Pilu is rubbed at the site of snakebite as it is Vishaghna in nature.
  3. Phala of Pilu is tishna in nature hence it is used for Shirovirechana nasya.
  4. Warm leaves of Pilu is tied over the site of Arsha and Arbuda .
  5. Bark of the Pilu is used for Dantadhavana.

Internal application :

Being anulomana ripe fruit and the seed are used as virechana in udara, gluma and arsha. Leaves being stambhana and raktapittaprashamana are used in raktapitta. Juice of the leaves or their quatha is indicated in mootrakrichchhra and as ashmarighna.

  1. Arsas (Piles) :- Fruits of Pilu (Salvadorapersica) is taken with buttermilk for a fortnight or a week is useful in Arsas (Piles).
  2. Gulma (A bdominal tumor) :- Pilu (Salvadorapersica) fruits fried then consumed with Lavana (Salt). This remedy is very good in Gulma.
  3. The cold infusion prepared from the fruit is given in a dose of 40-50 ml to treat fever.
  4. The small twigs of the plant Meswak is used as toothbrush for cleaning the teeth. This practice is still prevalent in some parts of the country where Pilu is found.

Shwasa-Kasa- Decoction of Pilu or Swarasa of Pilu is used in the treatment of Swasa-Kasa-Pratisyaya.

Dysmenorrhoea– The fruits and the decoction of the root are given to treat dysmenorrhea and difficulty in micturition. Mulatwak of Pilu is used as Aarvatajanan in Anartava.

Kushta- The paste of the leaf and seed is applied over the area affected with skin diseases. The extract of the plant is used in toothpaste by some of the manufacturers. wood of this plant is used for Dantadhavan

Dosage :

  1. BeejaChoorna – 1 to 2 gm.
  2. Phalarasa – 5 to 10 ml.
  3. Patra Choorna – 1 to 3 gm.

Pooga Herb


A tall tree grwosupto 100 ft. in height. Trunk – Straight, about 50 cm I circumference, uniformly thick. Leaves – Large, upto 7ft. long with numerous leaflets which are 30 to 60 cm long, Spadix much branched, bearing male and female flowers. Male flowers are numerous, sessile and without bracts. Female flowers are solitary or 2 or 3 at or near the base each ramification of the spadix, sessile and without bracts. Fruit – Orange coloured when ripens, 4 to 5 cm in diameter, having smooth surface.

Benefits :

External Application-

  1. Siddha tail of Puga is used in Katishula for massage
  2. Pichu of Deco ction of Pugaphala is used in Shwetapradar
  3. For Dantadhavana antardhum bhasma of Pugaophala is used.
  4. In Upadamsha, supari is rubbed and crushed and lepa done.
  5. It is ruchikara, mukhavaishadyakara, lalasravakara, deepaka and mukhadurgandhiharahence it is used aruchi, mukhaliptata, much durgandhi and agnimandya.
  6. It is stambhana and krimighna in nature hence it should be used, in atisara, pravahika and krimi. Acts as krimighna due to ericholine contained in it.Active against tape and round worms.
  7. In shukrameha and shvetapradara being shukrastambhana and garbhashayashothahara and also in bahumootrata.
  8. Uttarbasti of pug decoction is used to treat condition of leucorrhea.
  9. Or Add 1 tsf of betel nut powder in 500ml of water.This preparation is used for vaginal douch for curing the leucorrhoea.
  10. Sesame oil processed with areca nut is used for external application over joints affected with pain and inflammation.
  11. Supari powder is mixed with lime juice is given to treat anorexia and nausea.Dose-1-2gm
  12. Application of Pug powder gives good result in wounds and ulcers of Mouth like stomatities, throat infections should be treated with the decoction of nut.The decoction is used for gargling.
  13. Bettle nut powder should be rubbed on the teeth so as it prevents the yellowing of teeth.
  14. Take 2tsf of bettel nut powder,fry it in ghee.Mix equal quantity of ajwain,kattha and sendha namak in it.Add some water in this preparation and apply this on the inflammed area of Gum. This gives best result in gum swelling.
  15. Dusting of supari is done for quick wound healing. Being an astringent, it absorbs slough and wound liquids.
  16. Pugphala siddha jala is used in dysuria.
  17. In cough, betel nut chewed along with leaves of betel climber.
  18. Pug powder siddha milk brings back ability to sexual pleasure.Dose-1gm
  19. In Vatavyadhi, shalaki along with supari kwatha mixed with oil and given to drink.
  20. In gum infection-take the ash which is obtained after burning of one nut and mixed with 2tsf of clove powder and katha(1/4 cup).This preparation should be mixed with water and used for rinsing mouth .

Formulation (Kalp): Poogapaka.

Dosage :

  1. 1 to 2 gm.

Home Remedies :

  1. Upadamsa (Soft chancre)
  2. Paste prepared from Puga (Areca catechu) is applied over the part in case of Upadamsa (Soft chancre).
  3. Raktapitta(Intrinsic Haemorrhage)
  4. Puga (Areca catechu) is mixed with Candana (Santalum album) given internally in case of Raktapitta (InstrinsicHaemorrhage).

Side Effects or Contra-indications-

  1. Regular chewing of bettle nut is harmful to the health.It should be used in recommended dose only for medicinal purpose.
  2. Excessive chewing of nuts causes harm to your teeth.
  3. It is contra-indicated to Asthamatic patient (due to bronchoconstrictive effects of alkaloid arecoline) and pregnancy(due to Abortifacient effect)
  4. Due to increased incidence of oral cancer associated with betel chewing,it must not be used as masticatory.
  5. The seeds are fatally toxic at 8-10gm,fluid extract at 3.5l

Parnayavani Herb


Perennial herb, shrubby  below. Branches – hispidly villous or tomentose. Stem – 30 to 90 cm long fleshy. Leaves – 2.5 to 5 cm long, petioled. Broadly ovate or cordate, crenate, fleshy and aromatic. Flowers – purplish coloured with short tube.

Doshaghnata :

Kapha- vatshamak.

Benefits :

It should be used in aruchi, agnimandya, ajeerna, vishtambha, diseases of liver, udarashoola,atisara,grahani, vishuchika and in krimis by its ruchikara,deepaniya,pachaniya,vatanulomak,yakritottejak,grahi and krimighna in gunas.

Parnayavani juice is very effective for the treatment of vishuchika. It should be given in a dose of 12 ml. stat followed by 6 ml every hour for two doses. If no relief is obtained it should be repeated after 8 hours in the same manner.

            Swasa (Dificulty in breathing)

Parnayavani (Coleus amboinicus) leaves juice is given with honey in case of Swasa (Difficulty in breathing) in a dose of 5-6ml.

Udarasula (Pain abdomen)

parnayavani (Coleus amboinicus) leaves juice  with sugar is given  in case of Udarasula (Pain abdomen).

Fresh juice of Parnayavani is given in a dose of 10ml with hot water for the treatment of intestinal worms.

Juice of Parnayavani with Adraka swarasa is givenven in indigestion.

Juice of Parnayavani with Kutaj twak Kwath is given in diarrheaand irritable bowel syndrome.

Paste of Parnayavani leaves is given to treat renal and urinary calculi.

Local application of Parnayavani leaves paste over the forehead gives relieves from the headache.

Juice of Parnayavani leaves with sugar is givento children in colic,in asthama,chronic cough,strangury,calculus,gonorrhoea,piles and dyspepsia.

Expressed juice of parnayavani is applied around the orbit to relieve the pain in conjunctivis. The Expressed juice of leaves are carminative hence used in dyspepsia also.

Parnayavani churna is also used in vatavyadhis like akshepaka,apatanakaa.It is also used in hridayroga.

It is diuretic in nature.


Grahanimihira taila

Dosage :

5 to 10 ml.

Parijataka Herb

Parijataka herb

large shrub or small tree grows more than 15ft. in height. Bark – Grey or Greenish white, rough bark. Branches – Quadrangular strigose. Leaves – Simple, opposite, ovate, actue or acuminate, scabrous above with short bulbos hairs, densely pubescent beneath with appressed hairs, main nerves are few. Flowers – small, white with bright orange corolla tubes, 3 to 7 in each head. Fruits – Capsules, compressed, separating into two one-seeded segments.

Benefits :

  • Parijatak leaves juice or swaras is given in cases of constipation, intestinal worms, hepatomegaly and piles. Dose – 10-15 ml.
  • Dried leaves powder or bark of Parijatakwith betel leaf juice is given in asthma and cough. dose -2-3 g.
  • In eczema and ringworm infestation,the paste of bark or leaf is applied on affected part.
  • The flowers are used to prepare perfumes and scents after distillation.
  • The paste of the seeds is applied over the area affected with alopecia.
  • The juice of fresh leaves of Parijataka is used in a dose of 5-10ml to treat sciatica.
  • In case of snake poisoning ,leaves juice of Parijataka is administrated.


Leaf juice or swaras is deepaniya,anulomanak,pittasarak and krimighna in nature hence used inraktadushti, agnimandya, vibandha, yakridvikars, Pittavikaras, arsha and krimi

Being kaphaghna its leaf or tvagchoorna should be given with patrasvarsa in kasa-shvasa.

It is mootrala hence also useful in mootrakrichchhra .

In kushtha and jvara.In sarpavishabadha; parnasvarasa in gridhrasi being vedanasthapana and also as Vatavahinibalya.

Prameha (Diabetes)

Decoction of Parijata (Nyctanthesarbortistis) leaves are given as a specific remedy by susruta-carya in the treatment of udakmeha.

Gridhrasi (Sciatica)

Parijata (Nyctanthesarbortristis) leaves decoction prepared on mild fire can alleviate Gridhrasi (Sciatica).

Treatment for Slip Disc-

Take about a kilogram of Parijatak ,stem,leaves nd all.Wash them .Place them in a pan .Pour at least 3 lit of water .Bring it to boil.Lower heat .Simmer for half an hour.Cool.store

Drink one cup ,twice a day .The morning cup should be on an empty stomach


Parijatak eaves posses anti inflammatory properties.Daily intake of Parijatak leaves in a dose of 2tsf is advisiable in inflammartion.

Cough –

Juice of fresh p[arijatak leaves with honey is advisiable in a dose of 2tsf ,thrice a day in the treatment of cough.


Paste is prepared with Parijatak seed powder and water .This is applied over the infected gums.


Paste is prepared with Parijatak leaves.This paste is applied on the affected part .

Dengue Fever-

Macerate some leaves of Parijatak.Grind some black pepper,boil this with 3 glass of water reduced till half .Take this solution after cooling .Take this solution sip by sip for next 12 hours.


Take small piece of each Parijakak stem bark and Areca Nut.Wrap  them with Parijatak leaves,and chew this.


Take 2 grams of each Parijatak stem bark,Pippali and Adraak,boil them in a glass of water on low flame.Take this solution 2-3 days


Decoction preapared with Parijatak leaves,guduchi ,patol and shunthi is used.


For treatment of Nipah Virus-

Decoction of parijatak leaves is used to treat the Nipah Virus infection.But complete cure just with it cannot be guaranteed.

An erect, biennial or annual herb grows upto 80 cm in height. Stem – robust. Leaf – Basal leaves are spreading, petiolate, oblong-ovate, 15 to 20 cm, coarsely sinuate-toothed. Cauline leaves are smaller, sessile, clasping, obal-oblong, sinuat, pinnatifid, lobes, irregular, triangular and lanceolate. Inflorescence – Terminal scorpiod cymes. Flowers – Dirty-yellow veined with violet, throat is purplish-black. Fruits- Capsule enclosed in the persistent and enlarged calyx.

Benefits :

Internal application :

Grahi being katu, tikta and ushna. Moisture from pureesha is absorbed due to its rookshata. It is vatashamaka and angamardprashamana and analgesic as well. Hence it is used in atisara, pravahika, shola and grahani as a binding agent. It is used in anaha and gulma also.

Krimiroga (Worm infestation):

Parasikayavani (Hyoscyamusniger)powder with hot water after taking jiggery will expel Krimi (Worms) immediately.

Pain in ear

Parasikayawanisidhhatil tail is used in ear pain.

Intestinal parasites, roundworm

For parasitic infestation, eat 10gram jaggery empty stomach in the morning. After that eat 200-500mg of its seeds powder.

Urinary problems, stones

The Satva of seeds is given in dose of 12 drops, 3-4 times a day.

Pain in liver

The seeds oil is applied externally on affected area.

Dosage :

Choorna – 0.25 to 0.5 gm.



Annual or perennial. Stem – numerous from a woody root stock, 60 to 90 cm long, prostrate, slender, more or less hairy. Leaves – compound, 3-foliate, petioles 4 to 7.5 cm long, stipules are variable in length. Leaflets are 1 to 2.5 cm long, usually as broad as long, commonly three lobed. Glabrous or with a few hairs on the nerves. Petiolules are 1 to 2 mm long, hairy. Inflorescence – few flowered raceme. Flower- yellow in colour. Fruit- pods, 2 to 5 cm long and 3 mm wide. Straight, subcylindric having 6 to 12 seeds.

Benefits :

Internal application :

it is indicated in atisara, grahani and arsha as deepana and grahi.

It is also useful in vatarakta and raktadushtijanya vikaras as rakrashodhana and shothahara. In shukrameha, daha, jvara and in kshya as jeevaniya. Its root powder should be used in rat bite poisoning.

External application:
The leaf, root paste is applied over wounds to check bleeding and to quicken healing.

Madyaja Trishna (Thirst due to Alcohol consumption):

Patala patra (Stereospermum suaveolens),  Utpala root (Nymphaea alba) and Mudgaparni (Phaseolus trilobus) prepared cold infusion is used in madyaja trishna.

If taken with magadhi (Piper longum) is beneficial in Mdyaja trishna (Thirst due to alcohol).

Pradara (Menorrhagia)

Mudgaparni sidhha oil’s pichu (Phaseolus trilobus) is kept in genitals will check bleeding.

Dosage :

Quatha- 40 to 80 ml.




Annual slender extensively speading hairy herb.Branches – Strong and wiry. Stem – With woody root stock, slender, more or less hairy. Leaves – Alternate, trifoliate, large at the end, deltoid shaped at base. Petiole is 4 to 7.5 cm long and grooved. Inflorescence – Raceme.Flowers- White or Yellowish in colour. Fruit – Pods with 6 to 12 seeds in one fruit.

Benefits :

It is useful in aruchi, vibandha, udarashool, yakritvikar due to its rochan, pureeshjanan,shoolprashamana action.

It is useful in klaibya, rajorodha and stanyavikar due to its vrushya, stanyaanan property.

Due to balya, jivaniya action it is used in daurbalya and kushta.


Vijikaranartha (As an Aphrodisiac)

Masa (Phaseolus mungo) sidhha ghee or mashasidhhamilk will be an excellent Vajikara (Aphrodisiac) preparation.


Vatikasiroroga (Disorders of head to Vatadosa)

I Masa (Phaseolus mungo) and Mudga with ghee or oil or paste of Tila (Sesamumindicum) with milk is effective in vatajshiroroga.


For soft and smooth skin –

 Mix together powdered black gram, glycerin, rose water and almond oil and apply this paste on to your face. Wash it off with cold water after about 15 minutes. This remedy helps in moisturizing your skin as well making it smooth and soft.


For removing sunburn and suntan – 

Soak a quarter of a cup of black gram overnight and then grind it into a fine paste the next day. Mix some yogurt with this paste and apply it on your face, hands, neck and other affected areas. Wash it off after 15 to 20 minutes. Repeat this procedure 3 or 4 times a week can help to get rid of sunburns and tanning

big tree grows upto 40 ft. in height. Trunk – Very thick. Leaves – Compound, very big 20 to 45 cm long, bipinnate, pinnae are opposite or alternate, Ultimate leaflets are ovate or lanceolate, obtusely serrate, glabrous on both the surfaces. Petioles are short and slender. Inflorescence – Axillary panicles. Flowers – Fragrant, long peduncled, lilac coloured, petals are 1.5 cm long. Fruits – Drupe, ellipsoid – globose and 4 seeded.

Benefits :

External Application-

A polutice is prepared with Mahanimba flower and leaves.This polutice is applied to treat the nervous headache.

Oil prepared from seeds of Mahanimba is used in rheumatism.

Gargle of Mahanimba leaves decoction with alum is advisiable in mouth ulcers. Mouth wash with leaves decoction also recommanded in Gingivitis.

Paste of fresh leaves of Mahanimba is used to cure wounds,carbuncles and abscess.

Fruit paste of mahanimba is applied externally in skin allergy.

Washing of private parts with Mahanimba patra decoction cures the vaginal infection.


It is useful in gridhrasi, arsha, krimi, raktadushti, kasa, shvasa, kashtartava, skin diseases, chaturthikajvara, daurbalya and in poisoining caused by rat- bite.


Krimi (Worm infestation)

Mahanimbaleaves juice (Melia azadarach) is given internally in the treatment of krimi (Worms). Dose-50-60ml


Prameha (Diabetes)

Mahanimba (Melia azedarach) seed (6) is boiled with rice water, then 5 gm of ghee is added and taken internally, it is good remedy for prameha (Diabetes).



An aqueous extract of the heartwood relieves asthmatic attacks.



leaves juice application in hair roots gives good result in dandruff



Leaves decoction  is given in  hernia.


Joint pain

Bark paste is applied for joint pain.Boil leaves of Mahanimba applied over the affected part  gives elief from pain in case of gout.


Kidney problem, increased uric acid, serum creatinine

Bark decoction of mahanimba is given in kidney disorders for better result.Dose-30-40ml,twice a day

Eczema,ring worms,burns,Itching-

Local application of freash leaf juice over the affected parts gives good results in eczema,ring worm and itching.


Root paste of Mahanimba with honey is given to treat the fever

Dose-5 gm Bd for 5 days.



flowers paste application on the head is effective for  lice.

Leprosy and scrofulous ulcers-

Local application of poultices of Mahanimba bark is advisiable in leprosy and scrofulous ulcers.

Menstrual Problems-

Fresh juice of Mahanimba leaves in a dose of 5ml twice a day is given to treat menstrual disoders like heavy menses,irregular menses.


Small pieces of bark put in to water filled container for whole night.Next day filter it .This liquid is used to treat the ArshasDose-10ml Bd

Bark powder in a dose of 5gm with old jaggery ,twice a day is also recommonded in Arsha.


Decoction preapared with Mahanimba root bark (10gm), Nirgundi leaves (5-7eaves) and water(400ml)is used to treat the Sciatica.

Internal Parasites-

Advice to chew 25-30 gm of Mahanimba leaves of  for 3 days  for the removal of internal parasites.

Visham jwar,Malaria-

Boil the bark of Mahanimba(5gm) ,tulsi leaves(7 leaves) in 200ml f water and reduced it till 50ml.Filter this solution and take in a dose of 5ml Bd to treat the Malaria.

Side Effects-

Fruits of Mahanimba are poisonous in nature.In large amount it can be toxic and produces symptoms like vomitting,abdominal pain,bloody faeces.

7-8 seeds of Mahanimba prove toxic for adults.

It is unsafe during pregnancy and lactation

It can cause mouth burning,vomitting with blood and less amount of urine production.

Overdose of root bark may cause-respiratory pasralysis,tachycardia,ptosis,blueish discolouration of lips and muscle weakness.

It also cause hepatitis,splenomegaly,GI bleeding or circulatory and respiratory failure.
